Suspected car thieves flee Prospect crash, triggering school lockdowns

Police flooded a Prospect neighborhood Thursday morning to look for fleeing suspects after the thieves crashed a stolen car, state police said.

Students and staff at Prospect Elementary School, 75 New Haven Road, and Long River Middle School, 38 Columbia Ave., have been told to stay put, or “shelter in place,” said Michael P. Yamin, superintendent of Region 16 schools.

“We have additional armed security guards on site just as a precaution,” Yamin said in a note to parents. “The school, students, and staff are not in danger and their safety is our priority.”

According to the state police, Prospect officers and troopers from the Troop I barracks in Bethany responded to a crash near Radio Tower Road some time before 9 a.
